✦ Poetic Re-Creation in Classic Style (English)
So softly,
thou didst call my name—
a voiceless murmur,
O beloved.
The poplar,
cradled in the arms of wind,
reeled in rapture;
a cloud, in secret mischief, smiled;
and the cadence of raindrops,
delicate, unnumbered,
throbbed through the silence of the house.
A leaf,
untamed,
awakened in the naked spring;
the flame of the geranium
leaned forth between the iron bars;
while the wild rose,
slow of breath,
wandered along the wall.
Thy voice—
it beareth the savor of the forest’s dawn,
pure as the flowing river;
it passeth into the dreamlike chambers of my soul,
planting therein
the cool of mountain mornings,
the breath of earliest light.
Thy voice—
a miracle of hidden power;
it kindleth in the breast
the thirst of blossoming,
and o’er the brow of heaven
it layeth the blush of tender dawn.
Whisper,
once more,
call me, O beloved;
that the soul may contend
with the sullen visage of time;
that balm may be poured
upon ancient wounds;
that the demon of fear
be driven forth
from these four narrow walls.
Grant unto my silence
a song, resounding,
and let thy voice
again enfold me,
O beloved.
