How innocently we’d fallen in love
in a time when love seemed
—like a tree’s longing
thriving in spring’s embrace
bearing fruit with joy
its half-open blossoms
in rapture
sealed by a kiss of rain’s sweetness
dizzying
and in the enchantment of a first glance
all loneliness within the soul
torn apart, undone
How far we had wandered astray
as autumn, in its harsh season
scattered the green leaves of life
now yellow
upon the cold earth
Weak links of connection
relentlessly
shattered apart
and the merciless chill of silence
made its home
in the depths of our gaze
How defenselessly we were broken
when the fiery touch of your hands
no longer remained
to turn winter’s frozen snow
into the playful fires of childhood
to grace the sullen arch of the sky
with the echoes of laughter
How fearlessly
we saw our home’s four walls
shielded from life’s harms
in the clash of vile events
and how helplessly
we sat in a corner
adrift and alone
