Iranian Haiku Part II: Village

1

Dawn—
the rooster's call,
the scent of fresh bread.

2

The hot oven.
Woodsmoke
through an open window.

3

The old well—
a wet rope,
water dripping beneath the bucket.

4

Wild roses
over the garden fence—
the lane strewn with petals.

5

Mud-brick wall.
A sparrow's shadow
at the noon call to prayer.

6

Beside the wall
a hollyhock—
the hum of a bee.

7

Warm wind.
Grandmother's shawl
filled with the scent of sunshine.

8

Village sunset.
The narrow path,
dust rising from the herd.
