This year,
in the breath of the clear-souled elder Shalyar,
I will cast my omen
with garnet-red seeds of pomegranate,
so that—like the rouge of dawn—
the heart
may be freed
from the sorrowful hue of winter,
and the wounded body of the earth
be clothed
in the noble garment of spring.
This year,
with the words of the hidden seer,
I will set my intention;
leaf by leaf,
until it speaks plainly:
that wine rests in the hand
and the flower blooms in the embrace;
and at last,
with full longing,
seeks deliverance.
With the coming morning,
in the light of early dawn,
I will bind a covenant—
that upon the ridge of time
a torch be raised,
the horizon flushed with color,
and regret
be driven
from the lover’s heart.
Yalda,
I will entrust to the stillness of night
as a message of glad tidings,
if the turning of days
frees the ruined house
from captivity,
opens the hidden chamber of solitude
to the robe of light,
and in the desert of exhaustion
lets clear joy
be sung.
Yalda—
on the brightest day of the year,
I will cast the omen
once again.
